Alain Resnais’ “Stavisky” at Film Forum

A new restoration of Alain Resnais’ Stavisky (1974), starring Jean-Paul Belmondo and Charles Boyer, with a screenplay by Jorge Semprún and music by Stephen Sondheim, will run at Film Forum from Wednesday, October 3 through Thursday, October 11.

Stavisky traces the real-life saga of French con man Serge Stavisky (Bernie Madoff and Jack Abramoff rolled into one), whose rise to moguldom and scandalous 1934 fall brought down a government and nearly brought France to civil war. Resnais’ most straightforward work features three generations of Gallic super-stars: Belmondo’s resplendently attired Stavisky, Boyer (Best Actor winner at Cannes that year) as an aristocratic true believer, and newcomer Gérard Depardieu. With actress/writer Anny Duperey (costumed by Yves Saint Laurent) as Belmondo’s wife, a screenplay by Jorge Semprún, cinematography by Sacha Vierny (who also shot classics by Buñuel, Duras, Ruiz, and multiple works by Resnais and Peter Greenaway), and music by none other than Stephen Sondheim — a favorite of Broadway buff Resnais.
