Another Year, Another Christmas was first performed in Paris at Le Théâtre du Rond-Point to sold out performances, but this marks Marie Nimier’s American premiere. Haberdasher Theatre is excited to have been chosen to introduce her work to the American audience.
Marie Nimier is one of France’s most beloved novelists, songwriters, childrens book writers, and screenwriters. She is known for her surreal and magical writings such as Sirène (Mermaid), and Les Inséparables (The Inseparable Ones), and for her daring plays.
This experimental work chronicles the lack of communication in spoken and unspoken tragedies by following the troubled relationship between a mother, a son, and the son’s girlfriend(s) every year at Christmas dinner. It is a play about tradition, grief, perspective, and the passage of time. Through Marie Nimier’s inventive use of language and word play, Another Year, Another Christmas highlights the ways in which language can communicate deep emotions that are sometimes hidden within the veneer of formality and routine.
