Chagall: Fantasies for the Stage

An integral part of his Jewish upbringing in his native Belarus, music and dance informed Marc Chagall’s art throughout his lifetime. Over the course of his long career, he executed numerous commissions involving the performing arts, among them murals for the Metropolitan Opera House in New York and the vast ceiling of Paris’s Opéra Garnier. Bringing together 41 costumes with paintings and preparatory sketches, Chagall: Fantasies for the Stage delves into this aspect of his oeuvre by focusing on four productions—Aleko (Ballet Theatre of New York), The Firebird (New York City Ballet), Daphnis and Chloe (Les Ballets Russes), and The Magic Flute (The Metropolitan Opera). Appropriately, music enhances each section.
