Corot: Women

Trained in the Neoclassical tradition yet devoted to the direct observation of nature, Camille Corot helped elevate landscape from its former status as a minor genre and lay the groundwork for Impressionism. His figure paintings, which were rarely exhibited in his lifetime, represent a smaller, lesser-known, but still influential part of his oeuvre. Narrowing down that category even further, Corot: Women brings together 44 paintings of female figures executed between the 1840s and the early 1870s; these include nudes, individual figures in costumes, and an allegorical series devoted to the model in the studio. This will be the show’s sole presentation.
