The Damnation of Faust

Composed for vocal soloists, chorus, and large orchestra, Berlioz’s Damnation of Faust is famously uncategorizable; its creator coined the term légende dramatique to describe it. Skipping about through time and space, and populated with soldiers, peasants, angels, gnomes and numerous other earthly and otherworldly figures, the piece poses a considerable staging challenge to those wishing to bring it to operatic life. Presented in oratorio form, as it was at its 1846 premiere in Paris, it concludes this year’s Aspen Music Festival, whose theme is enchantment. With the Colorado Symphony Orchestra Chorus and soloists including the Grammy Award-winning mezzo-soprano Sasha Cooke.
