Early French Music at the Berkeley Festival & Exhibition

The extensive program of the San Francisco Early Music Society’s 15th biennial Berkeley Festival and Exhibition includes “Un musicien de premier ordre – Marc-Antoine Charpentier,” with the 30-voice California Bach Society Chorus performing the composer’s Litanies de la Vierge and Missa Assumpta est Maria; “Nasty Women – French Baroque Cantatas of Retribution,” featuring Louis-Nicolas Clérambault’s Médée and Elisabeth Jacquet de la Guerre’s take on the story of Judith and Holofernes, along with instrumental works by Marin Marais and Jean- Marie Leclair; “Musique à deux clavecins,” a program of Spanish, French, and German harpsichord music performed by two virtuosi of that instrument, Jory Vinikour and Philippe Leroy; and “The Big Wig – Sophisticated and Unexpected Music from the Courts of France and England,” showcasing compositions written under Louis XIV and Charles II.
