French Heritage Day in San Francisco

One weekend each year in September, historic sites around Paris and all over France — including monuments, privately owned buildings, gardens and government sites — open to the public. They began in 1984 as an initiative of the Minister of Culture Jack Lang and from 1991 till today, they are known as the European Heritage Days and are organized by the Council of Europe and the European Commission.

For the occasion, explore the French history of San Francisco, including “grands magasins”, the French consulate, and the history of the city’s French policemen, firefighters and newspapers!
