French Moderns and Expressions

The Baker Art Museum presents two simultaneous and complementary exhibitions on French Modern painting. The first, titled French Moderns: Monet to Matisse 1850 to 1950, displays approximately 65 works of art from the Brooklyn Museum’s renowned European collection that privileges France as the artistic center of international modernism from the mid-19th to mid-20th centuries. The second, Expressions: Matisse and Modern Art from the Permanent Collection, a complement to French Moderns: Monet to Matisse, 1850-1950, features a selection of works by modern artists whose innovative styles helped define avant-garde art. Whether French by birth or by circumstances, these artists experimented with non-traditional techniques, ideas and themes, and many of them were influenced by the colorful works of Henri Matisse.
