French Society in 18th-Century Prints and Drawings

Elegance and Intrigue: French Society in 18th-Century Prints and Drawings presents some 90 works on paper and decorative items from the twilight of the ancien régime, well represented by Rococo artists Boucher, Watteau, and Fragonard, through the dawn of the Napoleonic empire. Works such as The Storming of the Bastille by the Neoclassical artist Charles Thévenin evoke the intervening tumult. The centerpiece of the show is a selection of color engravings and etchings designed to look like chalk and gouache drawings, a high-end decorative trend at the time.
