Jean Renoir Retrospective

Throughout the summer, the Harvard Film Archive will screen Jean Renoir’s works. A unique occasion for cinema lovers to (re)discover this major figure, not only in French cinema but also internationally.

Jean Renoir (1894-1979) is now considered a legendary director, a genius who defines cinematic realism and humanist filmmaking. The rare opportunity to experience all of his films in a short period of time complicates this extremely oversimplified reputation. It allows for the chance to re-evaluate those films said to be failures because they do not conform to our received notions, and to enjoy a renewed appreciation for the acknowledged masterpieces. The HFA will show all of Renoir’s work in addition to documentaries about the director and his first screen effort as scenarist and producer. All silent films will feature live accompaniment.
