Next March, the Auditorium Theatre of Roosevelt University in Chicago will be hosting Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo, led by French artistic director Jean-Christoph Maillot, who was born in Tours. The company is also visiting New Orleans and Minneapolis when they tour the United States.
Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo is the premier dance company of Monaco, continuing the rich dance traditions of the country that were started by Sergei Diaghilev and his Ballet Russes in the early 1900s. The company will be performing Maillot’s La Belle, his unique version of The Sleeping Beauty, on March 3-4, 2018. Maillot’s interpretation of the story is based off of Charles Perrault’s fairytale, not the Disney version, so it is much darker and more psychoanalytical. Dance Magazine called the production “absolutely sublime.”
