Lucas Debargue

The much buzzed-about 25-year-old pianist Lucas Debargue did not touch a keyboard until he was 11 and began sustained formal training only at age 20. Four years later, he was competing in the prestigious International Tchaikovsky Competition, where he placed fourth but dazzled audience members and critics alike with his passionate, original interpretations of Medtner’s Piano Sonata No. 1 in F Minor and Ravel’s “Gaspard de la Nuit.” At this year’s Ravinia Festival, he performs those pieces in the first of two back-to-back concerts; the second program reveals his jazz chops.
