Although Richard Diebenkorn (American, 1922-1993) never met Henri Matisse (French 1869–1954), he was deeply inspired by the French artist’s work throughout his career. The first major exhibition to examine this influence, Matisse/Diebenkorn brings together 92 paintings and drawings by the two masters. The show follows the trajectory of Diebenkorn’s career as he moved from abstraction to representation and back again, and juxtaposes his work with pieces by Matisse that he would have seen firsthand.
