The Brooklyn Academy of Music’s 2017 Next Wave Festival kicks off this month. One of the first shows in the lineup is the world premiere of Olivier Py Sings Les Premiers Adieux de Miss Knife. The multitalented Py—author; actor; film, stage, and opera director—takes the spotlight as his alter ego, a rhinestone-bedecked cabaret chanteuse backed by a jazz ensemble.
Miss Knife sings original tunes and welcomes a different surprise New York guest on stage for each performance. Holding court with a four-piece jazz ensemble, she tears through a soul-baring suite of original French avant-cabaret, singing of life in the limelight and love in the shadows. Every night one New York guest artist—Joey Arias (Sep 20), Angélique Kidjo (Sep 21), Ute Lemper (Sep 22), and Jo Lampert (Sep 23)—will join Miss Knife’s soirée.
