Antoine de Saint-Exupéry penned Le Petit Prince while living in the United States during World War II. A beloved “children’s book” filled with philosophical insights, this classic of world literature has inspired all sorts of adaptations. Among these is the Academy Award-winning film composer Rachel Portman’s first venture into opera, which features a children’s chorus and an English libretto by the British dramatist Nicholas Wright.
This December, a production of the 2003 opera takes the stage at the Cowell Theater at Fort Mason Center for Arts and Culture. Opera Parallèle, a dynamic nonprofit company dedicated to making contemporary opera accessible to the broader community, incorporates digital wizardry and animated illustrations into its original production. Audience members are encouraged to dress up as their favorite character and sing along with the prince. Suitable even for young children, this version of The Little Prince would make a great choice for a special family outing this holiday season.
