Philippe Quesne’s “La Mélancolie des dragons”

With an ingenious hand for reinventing the conventions of theater, Philippe Quesne smartly constructs La mélancolie des dragons into a work that celebrates the absurd and explores the profound joy of friendship.

A hatchback has stalled in a beautiful snowy forest, stranding six metal-heads on their quest to build a hard rock–themed amusement park in protest of cheap consumerism. This deeply surreal fairy tale uses disarming wit and hints of magical realism — with the help of 1980s rock and medieval recorders — to celebrate the absurdity, joy, and wonder of human existence. La Mélancolie des Dragons promises a remarkably memorable, much talked-about theatrical experience.
