Renoir and Friends: “Luncheon of the Boating Party”

Through some 40 paintings, works on paper, and photographs, Renoir and Friends: “Luncheon of the Boating Party” tells the story of one of the artist’s finest works and offers a window onto the lives of the journalists, models, critics, and other individuals who inspired it. Renoir apparently made no preparatory studies for the canvas, which features 14 figures based on people he knew. He did, however, spend months working on it; a section of the exhibition devoted to recent research findings shows the many changes he made during this time. Highlights of the show include another beloved Renoir, The Dance in the Country, on loan from the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, and an assortment of works Gustave Caillebotte.
