Seurat’s Circus Sideshow

Parade de Cirque, Georges Seurat’s first nocturnal painting, depicts the scene outside a traveling circus in Paris, with people lined up to buy tickets and performers giving passersby a taste of the spectacle inside.

Organized around this Neo-Impressionist masterpiece, Seurat’s Circus Sideshow presents related works by the artist as well as dozens of paintings and works on paper by Daumier, Picasso, and other 19th-century talents who shared his fascination with this unique world. One standout is Fernand Pelez’s monumental Grimaces and Misery-The Saltimbanques, featuring life-size performers, complete with parrots and a monkey, side by side on a 20-foot-wide stage.
