“Silent Night” by Piedmont Opera

Piedmont Opera is producing Silent Night to honor the 100thanniversary of America’s entrance into the Great War. This will be the first time the opera has been produced in North Carolina.

Silent Night is based on the screenplay by Christian Carion for the motion picture Joyeux Noël. It was commissioned by Minnesota Opera with co-producer Opera Company of Philadelphia and opened on November 12, 2011 at the Ordway Theater, St. Paul Minnesota to great critical acclaim and standing-room-only houses for the entirety of its run. The opera is sung in English, German, French, Italian and Latin.

New York-based composer and Peabody Institute faculty member Kevin Puts won the Pulitzer Prize for Silent Night, his first opera. Pulitzer officials described the piece as “a stirring opera that recounts the true story of a spontaneous cease-fire among Scottish, French and Germans during World War I, displaying versatility of style and cutting straight to the heart.”
