The Toad Knew

The grandson of Charlie Chaplin and son of nouveau cirque pioneers Victoria Chaplin and Jean-Baptiste Thiérrée, James Thiérrée creates uncategorizable spectacles that combine acrobatics, physical comedy, music, and dance. His latest, La grenouille avait raison (The Toad Knew) centers on a brother and sister trapped in a subterranean space filled with mysterious objects, such as a piano that plays itself, a clingy violin, a mad scientist’s laboratory, and an interactive spiral staircase. Oscillating between dream and nightmare, fairytale and hallucination, the piece beckons viewers to dismiss logic and expectations of a straightforward narrative and simply enjoy a trip through the looking glass.
