Umberto Giordano’s “Andrea Chénier”

San Francisco Opera presents Umberto Giordano’s Andrea Chénier, inspired by the life of a French poet André Chénier, who was guillotined in the waning days of the reign of terror; the librettist took the liberty of adding a love triangle to the hero’s tragic story. First performed in 1896 at La Scala in Milan, the opera is best known as a vehicle for star tenors to show off their skills in the title role. Staged by the Scottish director David McVicar, this authentic period production arrives stateside after playing in London and Beijing. In Italian with English supertitles.
