Although best known for her sculptures, notably the 30-foot-tall spider titled Maman, Louise Bourgeois worked in many different media and styles and continued to evolve as an artist until her death in 2010 at age 98. Vast and varied as it may be, her oeuvre has a through line: an unflinching willingness to probe her scarred mental and emotional landscape, paired with a singular ability to transform the personal into the universal. While she considered her artistic practice a form of therapy, she also underwent actual Freudian psychoanalysis from 1952 to 1985 and chronicled the experience in writing. Louise Bourgeois, Freud’s Daughter presents a selection of these writings – some never before publicly displayed – alongside some 40 works from throughout her career, offering a privileged window onto their creation.
