Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts had intended to celebrate its 150th anniversary this past spring with Monet and Boston: Lasting Impression, an exhibition presenting for the first time in 25 years the institution’s entire collection of 35 paintings by the master of Giverny. When those plans were upended by the pandemic, the show did go on but in a virtual format. This month, starting on November 15, it finally opens for in-person viewing.

Boston has been a center for the collecting and appreciation of Monet’s paintings since the late 19th century. “Monet and Boston: Lasting Impression” highlights this city’s and the museum’s enduring commitment to the artist. Through the generosity and foresight of local collectors, a retrospective of Monet’s long career permanently resides within the Museum of Fine Arts’ walls — from early paintings like Rue de la Bavole, Honfleur (ca. 1864) and his experiments with Mediterranean light in Antibes (Afternoon Effect, ca. 1888) to works from his innovative HaystacksRouen Cathedral, and Water Lilies series.
