Soutine / de Kooning: Conversations in Paint

MARCH 7 – AUGUST 8, 2021

The Barnes Foundation
2025 Benjamin Franklin Parkway
Philadelphia, PA 19130

Born in modern-day Belarus in 1893, Chaïm Soutine moved to France at the age of 20 and became part of the cross-pollinating interwar throng of French and international artists now known as the School of Paris. Soutine / de Kooning: Conversations in Paint explores for the first time how his gestural, impastoed style as well as his blend of abstraction and figuration influenced the Dutch-American Abstract Impressionist Willem de Kooning. This is the show’s sole U.S. presentation; it travels to Paris’s Musée de l’Orangerie in the fall.
