Le carnaval de Venise

The operatic centerpiece of this year’s Boston Early Music Festival is a lavish new production of André Campra’s 1699 Le Carnaval de Venise, in which four lovers compete for each other’s affections amidst the pleasures of Carnival season. Although not as well-known today as Lully and Rameau, whose styles he bridged, Campra was one of the leading composers of the Baroque era. He is credited with introducing the opéra-ballet, of which this piece, featuring an opera within an opera, is a fine example.
