Gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 son talent, son acharnement et une bonne dose de culot, Buchwald persuade le r\u00e9dacteur en chef du Herald Tribune<\/em> \u2013 l’\u00e9dition europ\u00e9enne du New York Herald<\/em> \u2013 de lui confier une chronique sur les \u00e9v\u00e9nements culturels et les charmantes excentricit\u00e9s de sa ville d\u2019adoption. Sa chronique de Thanksgiving, \u00ab\u00a0Le Merci Donnant\u00a0\u00bb, parue en 1952, jette les bases de sa r\u00e9putation. Habilement, Buchwald part du principe que puisque les Am\u00e9ricains d\u00e9gustent le m\u00eame met tous les quatri\u00e8me jeudis de novembre, il peut facilement r\u00e9utiliser son papier pour accompagner cette dinde et sa garniture. Les ann\u00e9es suivantes, il en modifie le titre (\u00ab\u00a0Une dinde \u00e0 la sauce fran\u00e7aise\u00a0\u00bb ou \u00ab\u00a0Le Grand Thanksgiving\u00a0\u00bb) et y ajoute une introduction, affirmant, par exemple, que le texte a \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9voil\u00e9 en 1621 par un ponte de la colonie de Plymouth. Autre version : ce sont les confessions d\u2019un sergent en col\u00e8re de la L\u00e9gion \u00e9trang\u00e8re. Ou une tentative de s’attaquer au taux de change entre le franc et le dollar. Mieux encore, un coup de pub de l\u2019Association des \u00e9leveurs de dinde am\u00e9ricains.<\/span><\/p>

Malgr\u00e9 ces petites envol\u00e9es fantaisistes, le corps du texte restera inchang\u00e9 pendant 50 ans. Art Buchwald a toujours consid\u00e9r\u00e9 \u00ab\u00a0Le Merci Donnant\u00a0\u00bb comme sa pi\u00e8ce ma\u00eetresse, qui nous fait encore rire aujourd’hui. One of our most important holidays is Thanksgiving Day, known in France as le Jour de Merci Donnant<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>

Le Jour de Merci Donnant<\/em> was first started by a group of Pilgrims (P\u00e8lerins<\/em>) who fled from l\u2019Angleterre<\/em> before the McCarran Act to found a colony in the New World (le Nouveau Monde<\/em>) where they could shoot Indians (les Peaux-Rouges<\/em>) and eat turkey (dinde<\/em>) to their hearts\u2019 content.<\/span><\/p>

They landed at a place called Plymouth (now a famous voiture Am\u00e9ricaine<\/em>) in a wooden sailing ship called the Mayflower (or Fleur de Mai<\/em>) in 1620. But while the P\u00e8lerins<\/em> were killing the dindes<\/em>, the Peaux-Rouges<\/em> were killing the P\u00e9lerins<\/em>, and there were several hard winters ahead for both of them. The only way the Peaux-Rouges<\/em> helped the P\u00e9lerins<\/em> was when they taught them to grow corn (ma\u00efs<\/em>). The reason they did this was because they liked corn with their P\u00e9lerins<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>

In 1623, after another harsh year, the P\u00e9lerins<\/em>\u2019 crops were so good that they decided to have a celebration and give thanks because more ma\u00efs was raised by the P\u00e9lerins<\/em> than P\u00e9lerins<\/em> were killed by Peaux-Rouges<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>

Every year on the Jour de Merci Donnant<\/em>, parents tell their children an amusing story about the first celebration.<\/span><\/p>

It concerns a brave capitaine named Miles Standish (known in France as Kilom\u00e8tres Deboutish<\/em>) and a young, shy lieutenant named Jean Alden. Both of them were in love with a flower of Plymouth called Priscilla Mullens (no translation). The vieux capitaine<\/em> said to the jeune lieutenant<\/em>: \u201cGo to the damsel Priscilla (allez tr\u00e8s vite chez Priscilla<\/em>), the loveliest maiden of Plymouth (la plus jolie demoiselle de Plymouth<\/em>). Say that a blunt old captain, a man not of words but of action (un vieux Fanfan la Tulipe<\/em>), offers his hand and his heart, the hand and heart of a soldier. Not in these words, you know, but this, in short, is my meaning.<\/span><\/p>

\u201cI am a maker of war (je suis un fabricant de la guerre<\/em>) and not a maker of phrases. You, bred as a scholar (vous, qui \u00eates pain comme un \u00e9tudiant<\/em>), can say it in elegant language, such as you read in your books of the pleadings and wooings of lovers, such as you think best adapted to win the heart of the maiden.\u201d<\/span><\/p>

Although Jean was fit to be tied (convenable \u00e0 \u00eatre emball\u00e9<\/em>), friendship prevailed over love and he went to his duty. But instead of using elegant language, he blurted out his mission. Priscilla was muted with amazement and sorrow (rendue muette par l\u2019\u00e9tonnement et la tristesse<\/em>).<\/span><\/p>

At length she exclaimed, interrupting the ominous silence: \u201cIf the great captain of Plymouth is so very eager to wed me, why does he not come himself and take the trouble to woo me?\u201d (O\u00f9 est-il, le vieux Kilom\u00e8tres? Pourquoi ne vient-il pas aupr\u00e8s de moi pour tenter sa chance?<\/em>)<\/span><\/p>

Jean said that Kilom\u00e8tres Deboutish\u00a0was very busy and didn\u2019t have time\u00a0for those things. He staggered on,\u00a0telling what a wonderful husband\u00a0Kilom\u00e8tres would make. Finally\u00a0Priscilla arched her eyebrows and\u00a0said in a tremulous voice: \u201cWhy\u00a0don\u2019t you speak for yourself, Jean?\u201d\u00a0(Chacun a son go\u00fbt.<\/em>)<\/span><\/p>

And so, on the fourth Thursday\u00a0in November, American families sit down at a large table\u00a0brimming with tasty dishes and, for the only time during the\u00a0year, eat better than the French do.<\/span><\/p>

No one can deny that le Jour de Merci Donnant<\/em> is a grande\u00a0f\u00eate<\/em> and no matter how well-fed American families are, they never forget to give thanks to Kilom\u00e8tres Deboutish, who made this great day possible.<\/span><\/p>
