Lui se nomme Paul, il est parfois simplement d\u00e9sign\u00e9 comme \u00ab l\u2019homme \u00bb. On ne sait pas grand-chose d\u2019eux, sinon qu\u2019ils travaillent dans un conseil des prud\u2019hommes et se sont rencontr\u00e9s dans leur milieu professionnel. Chacun est mari\u00e9 de son c\u00f4t\u00e9 et leur relation est, a priori, parfaitement encadr\u00e9e. C\u2019est du moins ce que dit Paul \u00e0 Ema au d\u00e9but de leur histoire, puisqu\u2019il a une certaine habitude de l\u2019adult\u00e8re. Dans l\u2019habitacle rassurant de sa voiture \u00e0 lui, extension de son domicile, il laisse n\u00e9gligemment sa main glisser sur le genou de la jeune femme, d\u2019un geste de propri\u00e9taire. Ema, qui aime Fran\u00e7oise Sagan et se \u00ab fait une id\u00e9e fort romanesque des relations amoureuses \u00bb, attend peut-\u00eatre davantage de cette histoire, un antidote \u00e0 l\u2019univers sans surprise o\u00f9 elle \u00e9volue. Au fil des semaines, l\u2019extraordinaire s\u2019\u00e9rode pour faire place au banal, dans la grisaille d\u2019une banlieue sans \u00e2me.<\/p><p>Bref premier roman, <em>G\u00e9ographie d\u2019un adult\u00e8re <\/em>raconte l\u2019\u00e9volution d\u2019un amour dont on sait, d\u00e8s le d\u00e9but, qu\u2019il a pris fin. Adoptant le point de vue d\u2019Ema, Agn\u00e8s Riva observe les amants avec une pr\u00e9cision d\u2019entomologiste. Chaque chapitre se d\u00e9roule dans un lieu diff\u00e9rent : la voiture de Paul, un recoin de la maison d\u2019Ema exactement situ\u00e9 entre l\u2019\u00e9vier et le frigidaire, la chapelle d\u2019un monast\u00e8re, le salon de th\u00e9 d\u2019un centre commercial ou un appart\u2019h\u00f4tel. La froideur de ces terrains neutres contraste avec la temp\u00eate int\u00e9rieure d\u2019Ema et met cruellement en \u00e9vidence le foss\u00e9 qui se creuse entre ses aspirations et la triste r\u00e9alit\u00e9 de cet amour balis\u00e9, sans surprise.<\/p><p>L\u2019\u00e9criture est blanche et minutieuse, de plus en plus distanci\u00e9e \u00e0 mesure qu\u2019Ema se d\u00e9tache de ses r\u00eaves pr\u00e9fabriqu\u00e9s. On pense \u00e0 Annie Ernaux, pour la description clinique des sentiments et le d\u00e9cor de lotissements sorti de terre dans les ann\u00e9es 1980, o\u00f9 toutes les maisons se ressemblent. \u00c0 rebours de tout effet spectaculaire, Agn\u00e8s Riva inscrit cette liaison singuli\u00e8re dans l\u2019histoire collective, convoquant, \u00e0 travers le pass\u00e9 de Paul et Ema et l\u2019extr\u00eame banalit\u00e9 des lieux, une sociologie des classes moyennes en France.
