Du haut de ses 94 ans, avec son regard espie\u0300gle, Elliott Erwitt est sans doute la dernie\u0300re le\u0301gende de la photographie encore en vie. Membre de l\u2019agence Magnum depuis 1953, il a touche\u0301 a\u0300 tout : reportage social, portrait de ce\u0301le\u0301brite\u0301s, photographie de rue, mode, publicite\u0301, avec ce style inimitable, plein d\u2019humour et de compassion, qui permet de s\u2019attacher si facilement a\u0300 des inconnus.<\/p>

Elliott Erwitt a toujours aime\u0301 les hommes, qu\u2019il a magnifie\u0301 avec une rare constance, tout autant que les chiens, qu\u2019il a photographie\u0301s par centaines dans des situations souvent rocambolesques. Sa photographie est une observation honne\u0302te du monde, un tas de petites choses innocentes saisies sur le vif, une sorte d\u2019ope\u0301ra pour l’humanite\u0301. Alors quand un nouvel ouvrage d\u2019Elliott Erwitt voit le jour, avec des images jamais publie\u0301es, c\u2019est un e\u0301ve\u0300nement. \u00ab Cette e\u0301tude de l\u2019humanite\u0301, ce travail d\u2019une vie, est sans pre\u0301ce\u0301dent et nous rappelle a\u0300 tous de continuer a\u0300 marcher et de continuer a\u0300 e\u0301couter \u00bb, e\u0301crit \u00e0 propos du livre Jody Quon, directrice de la photographie de New York Magazine<\/em>.<\/p>

Les grands photographes ont souvent pour trait de caracte\u0300re commun l\u2019humilite\u0301. Chez Elliott Erwitt, elle a e\u0301te\u0301 forge\u0301e par une enfance impre\u0301visible, celle d\u2019un e\u0301migre\u0301 ne\u0301 Elio Romano Ervitz, a\u0300 l\u2019ho\u0302pital ame\u0301ricain de Paris en 1928, de parents russes qui avaient fui le bolchevisme, venus chercher en France une paix relative. Avec la monte\u0301e du fascisme en Europe, la famille Ervitz, dont le pe\u0300re Boris est juif, gauchiste, bouddhiste et franc-mac\u0327on, prend la de\u0301cision de rejoindre les Etats-Unis. Le petit Elio et sa me\u0300re Eugenie quittent le Havre pour New York le 2 septembre 1939, la veille de la de\u0301claration de guerre a\u0300 l\u2019Allemagne par l\u2019Angleterre et la France. Le paquebot britannique Athenia<\/em> sera torpille\u0301 par un sous-marin allemand dans les heures qui suivent et Elliott Erwitt se souvient que son navire, l’Ile-de-France<\/em>, est \u00ab totalement plonge\u0301 dans le noir parce que nous pensions que nous risquions d\u2019e\u0302tre coule\u0301 \u00bb.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

En 1949, Elliott Erwitt, qui entre-temps est devenu photographe, retourne en France pour re\u0301aliser un documentaire sur le cinquie\u0300me anniversaire du de\u0301barquement allie\u0301 en Normandie. Le film est aujourd\u2019hui malheureusement perdu, mais ce se\u0301jour lui permet de passer du temps avec des membres de sa famille qu\u2019il n\u2019a pas revu depuis son enfance et de re\u0301aliser quelques photographies, comme celle, emplie de douceur, de cette jeune fille devant un immeuble parisien, enfin publie\u0301e dans <\/span>Found, Not Lost<\/em><\/span><\/a><\/span>. L\u2019histoire veut aussi qu\u2019Elliott Erwitt ait rencontre\u0301 Robert Frank \u2013 autre monstre sacre\u0301 de la photographie, de\u0301ce\u0301de\u0301 en 2019 \u2013 sur le paquebot entre New York et la France.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Enro\u0302le\u0301 dans l\u2019arme\u0301e ame\u0301ricaine, Elliott Erwitt retourne en France en 1951, pour e\u0302tre stationne\u0301 a\u0300 Verdun, la ville des horreurs de la Grande Guerre. C\u2019est la\u0300 qu\u2019il rencontre sa premie\u0300re femme, Lucienne van Kan, une magnifique Hollandaise qui travaille a\u0300 l\u2019U.S. Army Post Exchange et que l\u2019on peut apercevoir dans ses images, allonge\u0301e sur un lit, en paisible endormie, ou dans l\u2019une des plus ce\u0301le\u0300bres photographies d\u2019Elliott Erwitt, aupre\u0300s de son premier enfant, nu, et de son chat. Impossible de penser qu\u2019il ne profite pas de ce nouveau voyage pour observer les Franc\u0327ais et les immortaliser dans ce qu\u2019ils ont de plus authentique, comme cette famille posant devant son objectif dans la valle\u0301e de la Loire ou ces titi parisiens dont les regards et sourires malicieux rappellent ceux des films d\u2019Albert Lamorisse.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Elliott Erwitt est alors un jeune homme romantique. Quand il s\u2019affranchit de sa garnison, c\u2019est pour aller tirer le portrait a\u0300 Simone de Beauvoir, engage\u0301 en 1952 par Alfred A. Knopf, un e\u0301diteur new-yorkais qui publie les e\u0301ditions ame\u0301ricaines de livres d\u2019auteurs europe\u0301ens. Ou pour rendre visite a\u0300 Robert Capa, le pe\u0300re du photojournalisme et co-fondateur de l\u2019agence Magnum. \u00ab Je me suis rendu a\u0300 son bureau a\u0300 Paris \u00bb, raconte-t-il a\u0300 un journaliste en 1977. \u00ab Il me semblait sympathique et il m’a promis de me prendre dans la minute ou\u0300 je sortirais de l\u2019arme\u0301e. \u00bb<\/span><\/p>

Il finira son service en 1953. Chez Magnum, il rencontre surtout Henri Cartier-Bresson, \u00ab le plus flamboyant des pickpockets du XXe<\/sup> sie\u0300cle \u00bb, surnom donne\u0301 par la journaliste Brigitte Ollier au ce\u0301le\u0300bre photographe franc\u0327ais. Henri Cartier-Bresson devient le mai\u0302tre absolu d\u2019Elliott Erwitt, presque une religion quand on compare les signatures \u2013 \u00ab une me\u0302me vision du monde, pre\u0301sente\u0301e avec honne\u0302tete\u0301 et franchise, sans jamais confondre les genres \u00bb, se souvient Elliott Erwitt dans un entretien avec France-Ame\u0301rique<\/em> en 2010<\/span><\/a><\/span>. \u00ab Henri donnait volontiers de son temps pour quelques conseils au jeune photographe que j\u2019e\u0301tais \u00bb, se souvient-il. \u00ab Mais attention, s\u2019il ne vous aimait pas, vous n’existiez pas ! \u00bb<\/p>

Lors d\u2019une exposition a\u0300 New York en 1987, Elliott Erwitt arbore fie\u0300rement un col de pre\u0302tre au milieu des cravates et n\u0153uds papillons habituels. Henri Cartier-Bresson adore. Le plus bel hommage d\u2019Elliott a\u0300 Cartier ? Cette croustillante photographie d\u2019un pe\u0300re provenc\u0327al a\u0300 ve\u0301lo<\/span><\/a><\/span> sur une route borde\u0301e de platanes, son fils et des baguettes bien accroche\u0301s sur le porte-bagages. L\u2019un de ses plus ce\u0301le\u0300bres cliche\u0301s, pris en 1955, utilise\u0301 par un office du tourisme pour illustrer et promouvoir l\u2019art de vivre a\u0300 la franc\u0327aise et que l\u2019on peut aujourd\u2019hui admirer dans la collection permanente du Metropolitan Museum of Art.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t
