Depuis le mois de novembre 1944, George Withers est affect\u00e9 au quartier g\u00e9n\u00e9ral des forces alli\u00e9es en Europe, sous le commandement du g\u00e9n\u00e9ral Eisenhower. A partir de d\u00e9p\u00eaches et de photographies \u00e9manant du front, il illustre les publications de l\u2019arm\u00e9e am\u00e9ricaine : Army Talks<\/em>, Overseas Woman<\/em> ou encore Stars and Stripes<\/em>. Ses dessins \u00e0 l\u2019encre exaltent le courage des femmes en uniforme, l\u2019h\u00e9ro\u00efsme des maquisards, l\u2019union des soldats alli\u00e9s pour la victoire et montrent la trag\u00e9die de la guerre, les civils condamn\u00e9s \u00e0 l\u2019exode, les proc\u00e8s de Nuremberg.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00ab\u00a0Son travail pendant la guerre avait une double nature\u00a0\u00bb, explique Brian Withers, professeur d\u2019arts plastiques \u00e0 la retraite et archiviste improvis\u00e9 de la m\u00e9moire de son p\u00e8re, terrass\u00e9 par une crise cardiaque en 1959. \u00ab\u00a0D\u00e8s qu\u2019il avait un moment de libre, il allait se promener dans Paris avec son n\u00e9cessaire \u00e0 aquarelle, une petite boite m\u00e9tallique pas plus grande que la paume de la main qu\u2019il emportait partout.\u00a0\u00bb<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Autant ses dessins pour l\u2019arm\u00e9e sont graves et solennels, autant son travail personnel est l\u00e9ger et empli de couleurs. Ici, un soldat songeur assis sur un banc au Jardin des Tuileries ; l\u00e0, un clown aux cheveux rouges au Cirque Medrano. Dans les jardins de la Croix-Rouge, les soldats am\u00e9ricains se d\u00e9tendent au soleil ; ils visitent Notre-Dame et fr\u00e9quentent les cabarets. Dans Paris lib\u00e9r\u00e9e, la vie reprend son cours.<\/span><\/p>

Lorsque vient le week-end, George Withers et ses camarades artistes empruntent une jeep et quittent Paris. Ils vont peindre au Bois de Boulogne ou le long de la Marne \u00e0 Chelles, \u00e0 l\u2019est de la capitale. \u00ab\u00a0Mon p\u00e8re adorait les peintres impressionnistes\u00a0\u00bb, se souvient Brian Withers. \u00ab\u00a0Il avait accroch\u00e9 des reproductions des toiles de Degas, de Monet et de Gauguin partout dans la maison.\u00a0\u00bb<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

George Withers aurait d\u00fb \u00eatre d\u00e9mineur. C\u2019est la sp\u00e9cialit\u00e9 qu\u2019on lui attribue lorsqu\u2019il s\u2019engage dans l\u2019U.S. Army en d\u00e9cembre 1943. Apr\u00e8s ses classes en Pennsylvanie et une formation aux explosifs en Virginie, il embarque sur le paquebot <\/span>Queen Mary<\/em>, converti en transport de troupes. Direction : l\u2019Ecosse, l\u2019Angleterre, puis la France. Le natif de Wichita, ancien joueur de football \u00e0 l\u2019Universit\u00e9 du Kansas, est un dessinateur r\u00e9put\u00e9. Avant de prendre l\u2019uniforme, il travaillait pour une agence de publicit\u00e9 sur la 5<\/span>e<\/span><\/sup> Avenue \u00e0 Manhattan : il a illustr\u00e9 des campagnes pour Ford, AT&T, Pan Am, Pepsi-Cola et Canada Dry. Lorsqu\u2019il arrive en Angleterre, ses croquis de la vie militaire attirent l\u2019attention de ses sup\u00e9rieurs, qui le redirigent vers un poste d\u2019illustrateur militaire \u00e0 Londres, puis \u00e0 Paris.<\/span><\/p>

Il poursuivra son activit\u00e9 apr\u00e8s la guerre, illustrant la presse am\u00e9ricaine. Ses dessins seront publi\u00e9s dans Life<\/em>, Look<\/em>, le New York Times<\/em> et le New York Herald Tribune<\/em>. Il illustrera une nouvelle de J.D. Salinger pour le Saturday Evening Post<\/em> et ex\u00e9cutera plus de 400 dessins pour le magazine f\u00e9minin Redbook<\/em>. \u00ab\u00a0Mon p\u00e8re parlait fran\u00e7ais \u00bb, explique Brian Withers. \u00ab\u00a0Il a vendu plusieurs dessins \u00e0 des journaux parisiens avant d\u2019\u00eatre rapatri\u00e9 en janvier 1946.
