American theaters are currently screening Diary of a Chambermaid, Benoît Jacquot’s take on the 1900 novel by Octave Mirbeau, famously adapted for the screen by Jean Renoir in 1946 and again by Luis Buñuel in 1964. This film hews more closely to the book, offering a harsh commentary on the 19th-century haute bourgeoisie. Léa Seydoux (of Blue is the Warmest Color fame) succeeds Paulette Goddard and Jeanne Moreau in the role of Célestine, a scornful Parisian chambermaid exiled to a provincial household where she must cope with an implacable mistress and lecherous master. With Vincent Lindon (The Measure of a Man) as Joseph, the brooding, anti-Semitic gardener who captures her interest.
