What Would Roland Barthes Think of his Hermès Scarf?

A l’occasion du centenaire de la naissance de Roland Barthes, Hermès a fait appel au designer Philippe Apeloig pour dessiner un carré de soie représentant des scans de Fragments d’un discours amoureux (1977). Le New Yorker s’en amuse, s’en moque, et s’interroge sur la réaction supposée de l’intéressé dans une chronique. “How would he have read the choice to emblazon his memory across a silk carré? What would he have made of this bourgeoisification of his thought?”
