Horst P. Horst: Essence of the Times

This exhibition displays 80 prints by the influential German-born American fashion and portrait photographer, whose elegant, meticulously composed images reflect surrealist and classical influences. Horst originally moved to Paris to apprentice in Le Corbusier’s architecture studio in 1930 but soon shifted to fashion photography, joining French Vogue at a time when his chosen medium was supplanting hand-drawn illustrations. The specter of World War II later drove him to the United States, where he worked for American Vogue for decades and captured international high society in an inimitably flattering light.
