Inspiring Walt Disney: The Animation of French Decorative Arts

DECEMBER 10, 2021-MARCH 6, 2022

Metropolitan Museum of Art
1000 Fifth Avenue
New York, NY 10028

The animated version of Beauty and the Beast opened in movie theaters three decades ago this year, a teapot and cup (Mrs. Potts and son Chip), clock (Cogsworth), and candelabra (Lumière) among its cast of characters. Inspiring Walt Disney: The Animation of French Decorative Arts showcases forty 18th-century European objects of the type that helped shape the studio’s aesthetic from the 1930s on, together with hand-drawn production art and film footage.
