Most closely associated with the House of Chanel, Karl Lagerfeld had rare staying power in a notoriously fickle industry; his career spanned 65 years, and he achieved iconic status well before his death in 2019. Bringing together some 150 garments, most paired with sketches, Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty highlights recurring visual and conceptual themes in his body of work, at turns historical and modern, lavish and minimalist, floral and geometric. The immersive show, designed by renowned Japanese architect Tadao Andō, illuminates Lagerfeld’s creative process, notably how he collaborated with his premières d’atelier, or head seamstresses, to bring his designs from the page to the catwalk
