Bringing together more than 140 paintings, sculptures, and works on paper, Matisse in the 1930s focuses on a period of creative renewal the artist experienced in his early 60s, following a trip to the United States. The specific catalyst was a commission to produce a monumental, triple-arched mural for the main gallery of the Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia. Matisse would create The Dance, distilling the dynamism of the subject with the utmost economy of line, composition, and palette.
