Monet/Mitchell: Painting the French Landscape
MARCH 25-JUNE 25, 2023
The classically trained American artist Joan Mitchell (1925-1992) made a name for herself in the male-dominated Abstract Expressionist movement of 1950s New York before decamping to Paris at the end of that decade. In 1968, she moved to an estate in Vétheuil, about an hour’s drive northwest of the French capital. There, she was in Monet territory; her property overlooked a house he occupied between 1878 and 1881, and Giverny was just 20 minutes away. Through 24 paintings, many monumental in scale, Monet/Mitchell: Painting the French Landscape explores similarities in how the two artists engaged with their natural surroundings.
