Vertigo of Color: Matisse, Derain, and the Origins of Fauvism

OCTOBER 13, 2023-JANUARY 21, 2024

The Metropolitan Museum of Art
1000 5th Avenue
New York, NY 10028

Vertigo of Color: Matisse, Derain, and the Origins of Fauvism focuses on a nine-week period that the two artists spent in the Mediterranean fishing village of Collioure in the summer of 1905. Boldly exploring new approaches to color, form, light, and perspective, they developed a vibrant aesthetic based on emotion and sensory experience rather than observable reality. The show brings together 65 paintings, watercolors, and drawings, including the artists’ oil portraits of one another from the U.K.’s Tate collection.
