Now stateside following its inaugural run at the Musée d’Orsay, City of Cinema: Paris 1850-1907 places the emergence of film in the context of social, political, artistic, and technological developments, and explores how the medium evolved from a novel urban entertainment into a bona fide art form. In addition to 195 objects ranging from paintings and sculptures to magic lantern slides and optical toys, the show includes early motion pictures from the Institut Lumière, Cinémathèque Française, and other major French film archives.
