Henri Matisse: The Red Studio

MAY 1-SEPTEMBER 10, 2022

Museum of Modern Art

New York, NY 10019

Henri Matisse’s L’Atelier rouge showcases a choice selection of works he created between 1898 and 1911, the year of the painting’s execution; they leap out against the monochrome red of their economically rendered surroundings. Henri Matisse: The Red Studio reunites the canvas with the surviving pieces – six paintings, three sculptures, and one ceramic – depicted therein. Related paintings and drawings, new research findings, and never-before-seen archival materials offer insight into the history, subject, and creation of this innovative take on the long tradition of artists depicting their studios.
