Joseph Stella: Visionary Nature

FEBRUARY 24-MAY 21, 2023

High Museum of Art
1280 Peachtree Street NE
Atlanta, GA 30309

The Italian-American modernist Joseph Stella (1877-1946) is best known for capturing the dynamism of urban life, most famously through his images of the Brooklyn Bridge. Bringing together some 120 paintings and works on paper, Joseph Stella: Visionary Nature is the first major museum exhibition to focus on a very different aspect of his work: the deep spiritual connection he felt to the plants and creatures of this world. The show examines his stylistic influences and sources of inspiration, with sections on his enduring connection to his native Italy and his invigorating exposure to Fauvism, Cubism, and Futurism during a 1912 trip to Paris.

After Atlanta, the exhibition will travel to the Brandywine Museum of Art in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, from June 17-September 24, 2023.
