Regarded as the father of French classicism, the 17th-century artist Nicolas Poussin favored a stately, formal rigor that contrasted with the Baroque tastes of the day. Beyond being a theme he explored repeatedly, dance informed his larger practice as he depicted bodies in motion interacting in the most harmonious way possible. Poussin and the Dance, which premiered at the National Gallery in London last October, casts a fresh eye on his paintings and drawings by placing them in dialogue with new films by L.A. choreographers
