Regarded as the father of French classicism, the 17th-century artist Nicolas Poussin favored a stately, formal rigor that contrasted with the Baroque tastes of the day. Beyond being a theme he explored repeatedly, dance informed his larger practice as he depicted bodies in motion interacting in the most harmonious way possible.
