Riopelle: Crossroads in Time

OCTOBER 27, 2023-APRIL 7, 2024

Riopelle: Crossroads in Time celebrates the centennial of the birth of one of most important and internationally acclaimed Canadian artists of the 20th century, who died in 2002 at age 78. Generally associated with Abstract Expressionism, he took an intuitive and highly physical approach to painting, abandoning brushes in favor of palette knives and even using spray cans in his later years. Spanning the period from 1942 to 1992 (half of which he spent in France), the show presents an array of Riopelle’s paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints, and collages, some never before publicly displayed. Also included are works by various contemporaries, notably his longtime partner Joan Mitchell.
