Thierry Mugler: Couturissime

NOVEMBER 18, 2022-MAY 7, 2023

Brooklyn Museum
200 Eastern Parkway
Brooklyn, NY 11238

The late fashion designer Thierry Mugler, who died this past January at the age of 73, helped shape the look of the more-is-more 1980s and early 1990s, creating spectacular garments inspired by insects, robots, and vintage American cars. His theatrical runway shows featured supermodels, drag queens, porn stars, and assorted famous figures (Ivana Trump, Diana Ross, Tippi Hedren, Patty Hearst…). The high-tech, immersive retrospective Thierry Mugler: Couturissime presents nearly 130 ensembles along with accessories, videos, archival materials, and images by Richard Avedon, Helmut Newton, and other greats of fashion photography. The show also explores Mugler’s venture into perfumery, notably his best-selling scent Angel, a sweet treat in a star-shaped bottle.
