On August 20, the Hirshhorn Museum reopens to the public after 17 months. Among the shows awaiting visitors are Marcel Duchamp: The Barbara and Aaron Levine Collection, celebrating a promised gift to the institution of more than 50 works spanning the artist’s career, including various readymades and L.H.O.O.Q., his mustachioed and goateed Mona Lisa. “Although you cannot define art, [Duchamp] expanded its definition,” said Aaron Levine, an avowed Duchamp obsessive, in an interview with Hirshhorn Senior Curator Evelyn Hankins. “He expanded it like John Cage expanded music, like Bach expanded music.”
